Artist's Philosophy
As a fine artist much of my work reflects a deep love of dogs. As a breeder, and collector of dog art within my own breed, I know how nice it is to see dog art with show coat, correct conformation, head, markings, etc., that fit a breed's standard. So it has become my goal to merge the world of fine art, and accurate dogs -- artwork to be displayed in the living room, not just the kennel room. Artwork for dog fanciers that is above the ordinary, that stands on it own as a piece of art regardless of breed.

While I have worked in other mediums, oil painting is my favorite, and all my current work is in oils.

I love playing with color and light and have been influenced by the Russian Impressionist style. They are both very important elements in my work. I'm striving to catch the "essence" a breed, to create something new and different, -- a type of art that the dog world has not seen before. My recent work is moving in a looser more representational style, but the structural accuracy of the dog will always remain true.

Workshops are a way to continue my growth as an artist and like other artists my goal is to continually improve my talents. I am so excited to see what the future will bring.

About the Artist
The award winning artist, Karen McClelland started out with a love of animals many, many years ago. First as a young girl with a standardbred mare, then with a family move came the introduction of Rhodesian Ridgebacks into her life starting as a junior handler. Having been in the dog game all her life she has participated in just about every aspect of purebred dogs, with the majority of it in the breed ring. Horses came back into her life in the form of a Morgan mare.

Karen's original oil paintings, equine, canine, and still life can be seen in juried shows around the country, and Parklane Gallery in Kirkland, Washington. She currently lives in the beautiful Pacific Northwest on 20 acres with a collection of animals, including three Rhodesian Ridgebacks, her daughter’s german warmblood, her own Appendix (thoroughbred/quarter horses), a wonderful husband and two children who are now teenagers.
